Have you ever sat quietly, reflecting on the promises and vision God has shown you for your life, and found yourself wondering, “Why does the path to get there feel so chaotic, full of roadblocks, delays, and detours?” If God has truly spoken, why does the journey seem so opposite of the destination?
The truth is, it’s not always because you’ve made a wrong turn. Sometimes, it’s because God is leading you through training ground. These aren’t punishments—they’re purposeful moments. It could be a season of character development. Maybe it’s patience God is growing in you. Or perhaps it’s a moment designed to deepen your trust in Him.
These twists and turns may feel like missteps, but in reality, they’re often part of God’s divine curriculum.
“And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose.”
—Romans 8:28 (NIV)
Let’s consider Joseph.
In Genesis 37, God gave Joseph a dream—a vision of influence and leadership. But what followed? Betrayal, slavery, false accusations, and imprisonment. If God had shown him all those details upfront, would Joseph have embraced the vision?
Imagine God saying, “You’ll be sold by your brothers, falsely accused of assault, and forgotten in prison—but don’t worry, you’ll end up second-in-command of Egypt.” Who would willingly sign up for that?
“Until the time came to fulfill his dreams, the Lord tested Joseph’s character.”
—Psalm 105:19 (NLT)
God was refining him—teaching Joseph humility, wisdom, and stewardship. The pit and the prison were just as much God’s plan as the palace.
Now take David.
Anointed by Samuel in 1 Samuel 16, David was promised the throne. Yet for years, he was on the run—hunted like an animal by King Saul. He lived in caves, constantly facing death. If God had told David, “You’ll be a fugitive for years before you wear the crown,” David might have refused the calling altogether.
But during those years, David learned what it meant to rely on God as his protector and provider. He wrote psalms in the wilderness—prayers that still comfort us today.
“The Lord is my shepherd; I lack nothing… Even though I walk through the darkest valley, I will fear no evil, for you are with me.”
—Psalm 23:1,4 (NIV)
We often want God to give us the blueprint, but He only gives us the vision. Why? Because if we knew every valley, betrayal, and delay ahead of time, many of us would say, “I’m good. Never mind. I’ll pass.”
“For we walk by faith, not by sight.”
—2 Corinthians 5:7 (KJV)
God shows us the end to anchor our hope, not to map out the journey. Each season—the delays, frustrations, and even heartbreaks—are designed to shape us into the kind of people who can carry the weight of His promise.
“Consider it pure joy, my brothers and sisters, whenever you face trials of many kinds, because you know that the testing of your faith produces perseverance.”
—James 1:2–3 (NIV)
So if your life feels off-track, take heart. You may be right in the middle of God’s plan, not outside of it. Your detour might be His design. Your delay might be divine preparation. Trust the journey—even when it makes no sense. You’re not being punished; you’re being prepared.
“Being confident of this, that he who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion until the day of Christ Jesus.”
—Philippians 1:6 (NIV)
