Have you ever felt like you took one step forward, only to tumble ten steps back? Maybe you’ve put in effort, made progress, and felt like you were finally gaining ground—only to lose it all and feel like you’re starting over at square one.
But here’s the truth: When God is guiding your life and the Holy Spirit dwells within you, you are never truly back at square one. Why? Because God is the One directing your steps.
Psalm 37:23 says:
“The steps of a good man are ordered by the Lord: and he delighteth in his way.”
If God Himself is directing our steps, how can we ever go backward? How can we say, “I’m starting over” when every step we take is already part of His divine plan?
Proverbs 16:9 reminds us:
“A man’s heart deviseth his way: but the Lord directeth his steps.”
We may make our own plans, but when we align ourselves with God’s calling, He establishes our path. And God’s path never moves in reverse. He does not make mistakes, and only mistakes cause things to go backward.
That’s not to say we won’t sometimes take a wrong turn. There may be times when we take a detour, straying from His plan and needing to course-correct. But God is always ready to guide us back to where we belong.
Isaiah 30:21 says:
“And thine ears shall hear a word behind thee, saying, This is the way, walk ye in it, when ye turn to the right hand, and when ye turn to the left.”
That still, small voice of God can be hard to hear amidst the noise of daily life, especially in times of struggle. But when we seek Him and listen intently, He makes our steps clear.
Jeremiah 29:11 reassures us:
“For I know the thoughts that I think toward you, saith the Lord, thoughts of peace, and not of evil, to give you an expected end.”
God has already planned a future for you—one filled with hope, not destruction. He does not lead us to dead ends or failures. He leads us toward purpose, growth, and fulfillment in Him.
A Call to Action
Take a moment to reflect: Are you trusting in God’s plan, or are you letting setbacks make you believe you’ve lost everything? If you are feeling discouraged, remember that every step you take with God is still progress. Even detours are part of His design when you allow Him to lead.
Commit today to listening for His direction. Spend time in prayer, seek His wisdom in His Word, and trust that no matter what it looks like, He is guiding you forward. The steps are already laid out—walk in them.
