Are you Hearing, Listening, and Obeying God?

Every day, we communicate with God through the Holy Spirit, whether in prayer or in worship. But when we’re listening for God’s still, small voice, are we truly hearing it, understanding what He is saying, and obeying His instructions? These three steps—hearing, listening, and obeying—are vital for growing in our relationship with Him.

Hearing God’s Voice

Hearing God isn’t always easy. For a new believer, it can feel challenging or even frustrating to discern His voice. However, as we grow in faith and deepen our relationship with Him, we become more attuned to that still, small voice.

How to Hear God More Clearly

Here are nine steps to help you hear, listen, and respond to God’s voice:

1. Prayer

Treat prayer as a two-way conversation. Speak to God as your Father, ask specific questions, and then be still and quiet. His reply may not come immediately, but trust His timing. Keep praying and believing that He will answer in His perfect time.

2. Read the Bible

The Bible is God’s Word and a primary way He speaks to us. As you read, pay attention to verses that resonate with you. Often, God highlights scripture to guide and encourage us.

3. Quiet Time and Solitude

Set aside daily time to be alone with God. Eliminate distractions like phones and social media. In the stillness, you’ll often sense His presence and hear His voice more clearly.

4. Worship

Worship daily, even multiple times a day. As you lift your voice, hands, and heart to Him, the Holy Spirit often speaks and moves powerfully during these moments.

5. Sensitivity to the Holy Spirit

Be attentive to the nudges, impressions, and thoughts the Holy Spirit places on your heart. Reflect on these promptings to see if they bring peace and clarity, and ensure they align with scripture.

6. Community and Counsel

Surround yourself with mature believers who also listen to the Holy Spirit. Sometimes God speaks through the wisdom and encouragement of others, so be open to their input.

7. Obedience

Act on what God has placed on your heart, even in the small things. Obedience demonstrates your willingness to trust Him, and as you obey, He will provide greater clarity and direction.

8. Journaling

Write down your thoughts, prayers, and what you believe you’re hearing from God. Use scripture to evaluate these impressions and discern His voice.

9. Seek Confirmation

God’s voice will never contradict His Word. If what you believe He’s saying aligns with scripture and brings peace and clarity, pursue it confidently. Trust that He will provide further guidance as you step out in faith.

Call to Action

Hearing God’s voice is a privilege, but it comes with responsibility. When He speaks, we must listen with open hearts and respond in obedience. Take time today to quiet your spirit, seek His presence, and act on what He is calling you to do. God’s plans for you are perfect, and when you trust and obey, He will lead you into greater blessings and purpose. Are you ready to hear, listen, and obey?
